After Obama's speech before Netanyahu |
|
By Yossi Beilin, Yisrael Hayom 22.5.2011 EXCERPT Tranlated by GI Staff Obama's far reaching speech has two subtexts: First, he is not afraid because of the campaign at his doorstep to articulate positions regarding the Israeli - Palestinian conflict opposing those of Netanyahu. He gave up the attempts of persuasion in private and did not flinch from creating a conflict. But this does not conflict with Israel and differences of opinions should not harm the close ties between the world's most important power and the Jewish state. Secondly, Obama is not puttng forward an immediate action plan. He does not offer formulas to bypass the deadlock and says to the two sides: this your issue first. I have outlined a solution. But if you prefer to exhaust each other to build settlements on the one hand and to ask the world to establish a virtual state in September on the other hand, I don't have the strength or desire to prevent this. I'm just saying it's not acceptable to me.
