APN, 02.12.05
An unexpected turn of events that is raising eyebrows in Washington, the American Jewish community and beyond.
Contrast this press release on Iran from the American Israeli Political Action Committee-- an organization that tends to support Bush administration Middle East policy-- with this one from the generally critical Americans for Peace Now:
APN Congratulates Rice, Israelis, & Palestinians on Gaza Accord
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - November 15, 2005

Washington, D.C.—Americans for Peace Now (APN) today congratulated U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Quartet Envoy James Wolfensohn, Israel, and the Palestinian Authority on reaching an agreement for border crossings arrangements for the Gaza Strip. The accord was made possible only with an unprecedented amount of direct involvement by Administration and Quartet officials. APN is a Jewish, Zionist organization dedicated to enhancing Israel's security through peace and to supporting the Israeli Peace Now movement.
"The Gaza border crossing agreement is a win-win deal for all sides," said Debra DeLee, President and CEO of Americans for Peace Now. "Israel will have its security needs met, the Palestinians will get greater freedom of movement for people and goods, and the United States will have improved its stature as an honest broker between the two parties. Of course, there can be a huge distance between reaching an accord and implementation on the ground—a great deal of work remains to be done that will require hands-on participation by the United States and others. But we hope that these negotiations have demonstrated to the Bush Administration that the U.S. needs to be deeply involved in the peace process if there is to be any hope of progress, even on relatively small issues, and that success is possible in Israeli-Palestinian diplomacy when the U.S. intervenes."
