Five questions on the Building of the Wall in Jerusalem

By Gil Korotki, Yediot Ahronot

Five short questions with Gadi Baltiansky, Director General of the Geneva Initiative – On the Building of Walls in Jerusalem
translation by Geneva Initiative
So did Netanyahu divide Jerusalem? “It would seem so, and it is a pity that it was down in response to terror and not as a part of an agreement as we have proposed.”
How is your plan different from what is happening now? “Peace is the most important element of security, and we add to that an agreed border, a non-militarized Palestine and detailed security mechanisms.”
And could that really work? “Without an agreement with the Palestinians, we will be forced to live between one bloody round and the next. Everyone can think about what they would prefer.”
Are the Israeli and Palestinian publics ready for a partition plan like this? “All of the opinion polls of both Palestinians and Israelis show that they would support a package like the Geneva Initiative”
We all know that walls have a negative connotation; they would require more checkpoints, more soldiers, is that another solution? “The current circumstances are strengthening the hatred. In fact, a border and separation is exactly what can bring good neighborly relations and cooperation in the long term.”
