24-28/01/2008: GI participates in IUSY World Congress in Santo Domingo
Date: 28.01.08

On January 24th-28th, Geneva Initiative representative Dror Morag participated in the 27th World Congress of the International Union of Socialist Youth, along with representatives of over 200 organizations from around the around the world, including Arab and Muslim states.

GI's messages were successfully conveyed at the congress, and IUSY's resolution on the Middle East included a commitment to the Geneva Accord and to a final status agreement between Israel and the Palestinians. The resolution adopted a model for a final agreement reached through direct negotiations and embraced the Geneva principles as a model for resolving the conflict. Additionally, the IUSY resolution adopted GI's mechanism as a model for a prisoner release mechanism.

In addition to active participation in the discussions that led up to the resolution, Morag promoted the Geneva Initiative by circulating copies of the Geneva Accord in English, Spanish, Arabic and Russian as well as GI informational materials.

Finally, congress participants drafted an action plan for the Middle East which included a conference for youths to be held in Rome in 2008. GI co-architects Yossi Beilin and Yasser Abed Rabbo were mentioned as possible speakers for the conference, which would include a session addressing existing final status models.
