GI Chairman Yossi Beilin meets Egypt’s Foreign and Intelligence Ministers in Cairo

On June 21-22, GI Chairman Yossi Beilin met with Egypt’s Foreign and Intelligence Ministers in Cairo.

In the meeting which took place in Cairo, the Egyptian Intelligence Minister, Omar Suleiman, told GI Chairman, Yossi Beilin that he is awaiting to meet the newly appointed Israeli representative for the negotiations on the release of Israeli soldier, Gilad Schalit. According to him, there is importance in both resuming the negotiations which were halted over half a year ago and in brining a change to both sides’ approach.

In addition, Minister Suleiman stated that he is dedicating many efforts to establishing a joint Fatah-Hamas Committee which will deal with the rehabilitation of Gaza under the leadership of Palestinian President Abbas. According to him, if the negotiations on this matter do not bear fruit and such a committee is not established by July 7th he will withdraw Egypt’s involvement from the matter.

Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Aboul Gheit said to Beilin that he believes that US President Obama will propose concrete steps regarding effectively bridging over the gaps between Israelis and Palestinians: both with respect to stands on a final-status agreement and steps to be taken on the road to such an agreement.
