On March 14th, 2007, PPC- Geneva Initiative held an open workshop on the culture of peace in the southern West Bank city of Hebron. The 76 participants included young political activists, community leaders, city officials including Hebron Mayor, Mr. ‘Areef Al-Jabari, and Palestinian Legislative Council Member from Fatah, Mrs. Sahar Qawasmi.

 

The meeting focused on the latest political developments and the possibilities to resume the peace process.

Mr. Al-Jabari stressed the importance of “achieving peace and security for the Palestinian people”, adding that the main focus should be to fight the factors causing the security chaos in the society.

Mrs. Qawsmi gave a briefing on the history of the Palestinian cause, highlighting peace agreements which were reached with Israel. Qawasmi welcomed the Mecca agreement, stressing the importance of reaching a solid united position based on the PLO’s principles and the national unanimity accord.

 

Palestinian Youth Movement Representative, Maram Jubran spoke about the importance of building bridges between the civil society organizations and the youth sector.

The workshop was concluded with a discussion focusing on the importance of spreading the culture of peace, dialogue, and coexistence.

 

The activity was organized as part of a series of activities under the Project "Strengthening the Voices of Peace", sponsored by the European Commission Technical Office in Jerusalem.
