Highlights of Palestinian and Israeli GI activities in September and October |
Below are several significant and successful activities organized by both the Ramallah Geneva Initiative headquarters (Palestinian Peace Coalition) and the Tel Aviv headquarters over the past two months. They represent only a fraction of all activities held during that timeframe.
Some 40 people attended the seminar, including politicians, analysts, media specialists and community leaders from the city.
The three speakers at the seminar were Jerusalem affairs expert Nazmi Al Jubeh, Hatem Abdulkader, advisor to PM Salam Fayad on Jerusalem Affairs, and Saman Khoury, political activist and Geneva Initiative board member. On September 6th, PPC-GI concluded a civil peace workshop in Gaza City, attended by representatives of local youth organizations, civil society organizations, and university students’ councils. Some 74 youths participated in the workshop, which focused on the importance of strengthening the ideology of dialogue and nonviolence in society. On September 10th, PPC-GI concluded a workshop in East Jerusalem on the opportunity to resume the peace process, attended by some 75 young women. The workshop addressed women's role in spreading the culture of peace in a community, and focused on the important role that Palestinian women play in society.
The tour consisted of three central points where the route of the fence is currently being debated in Israel’s judicial system. Approximately 50 people participated in the tour, among them senior diplomats, including ambassadors and consuls, members of the international community, and foreign press.
On Sunday, October 7th, the Labor Party hosted a GI conference at the official Labor Party Offices in Tel Aviv. Speakers included Labor MKs Ephraim Sneh and Nadia Hilo as well as Palestinian Minister of Prisoners' Affairs and GI Board Member, Ashraf el Ajrami. The discussion was facilitated by GI Director-General, Gadi Baltiansky and was attended by over 50 of the Labor Party's senior members. On Sunday, October 14th, GI's Tel Aviv office arranged a tour to the of the security barrier in the Sharon-West Bank region for municipality heads. Among the participants were the mayors of Hod Hasharon and Rosh Ha'ain. Col. (Res). Shaul Arieli guided the tour and discussed the Green Line, the development of the barrier, and the public and judicial battle over its route.
