Seminar for Journalists on the Role of Media in the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict

From November 25 to 27, the Geneva Initiative convened a joint Israeli-Palestinian seminar for journalists in Istanbul, Turkey in cooperation with the Olof Palme International Center.


The seminar included briefings on the political situation in Israel and the Palestinian Territories, the role of Turkey in the region, and the power of media and the role of journalists in areas of conflict. It also address the GI campaign specifically, and the impact of mass media campaigns within Israeli and Palestinian societies.


Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Israela Oron, Former Deputy National Security Advisor at the NSC and Former Head of the IDF’s Women’s Corps, spoke about refugees and Sam'an Khoury, Director of the Peace & Democracy Forum in Jerusalem and Former Director of International Relations at the Palestinian Ministry of Culture and Advisor to Minister Yasser Abed Rabbo, spoke about Jerusalem. Other details of the Geneva Initiative solutions regarding security, borders and ongoing activities were communicated to participants by GI's Israeli spokesperson, Gilly Harpaz.


Ohad Hemo (Channel 2) and Eli Bardenstein (Ma'ariv) offered Israeli perspectives on the challenges of reporting on the conflict. Hamada Faraneh (Freelance) and Mohammed Daraghmeh (Associated Press) offered Palestinian perspectives on the same subject.
