Slovakia FM: I appreciate the Geneva Initiative and I think that it could play an important role in unblocking the peace process

On Thursday, February 19th, Slovakia Minister of Foreign Affairs Miroslav Lajčák met with Geneva Initiative Israeli and Palestinian Director-Generals, days before his scheduled visit to the region in which he is planned to meet with Israeli and Palestinian official leaders.

17.02.2010

In addition to meeting the Foreign Minister, the Geneva Initiative Israeli and Palestinian heads: Gadi Baltiansky and Nidal Foqaha respectively, met with the Director-General of the Slovakian Ministry of Foreign Affairs who stated that if Israel does not reach a Geneva-Initiative-style solution soon, it will become an apartheid state.

The two meetings were held further to a conference attended by Baltiansky and Foqaha (on February 17) hosted by the Slovak Foreign Policy Association and EurActiv.sk in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic.

The aim of the conference was to present the current solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on the Geneva Accord and explore possible ways of engaging the international community and especially the new EU-member states into the process of reaching an agreement and implementing its parameters. For the first time in Slovakia, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its possible solutions were discussed by experts from Israel, Palestine as well as Central Europe.

Baltiansky and Foqaha also gave interviews to the local press and their visit generated broadcast and online news coverage.
