Yossi Beilin Speaks to Diplomatic Community |
8.07.09 On July 8, Dr. Yossi Beilin addressed 40 members of the international community at the Geneva Initiative offices in Tel Aviv. Dr. Beilin spoke about the Geneva Initiative’s new ideas and recent political developments in the region, and illustrated how the red lines which PM Netanyahu stated in his Bar Ilan speech are addressed in the Geneva Accord – the principles of which were drafted by leading Israeli and Palestinian figures. Beilin also spoke about the impact that President Barak Obama has had in the Middle East and referred to the President’s recent speech in Cairo. The briefing was attended by ambassadors, political secretaries, and other members of the diplomatic community as well as representatives of several foreign media outlets.
Dr. Beilin is Chairman of the Geneva Initiative, Israel and Founder and President of Beilink International Affairs, Ltd. He is a former member of Knesset, former Chairman of the Meretz-Yachad party, and former Minister of Justice, Minister of Economy and Planning, Deputy Foreign Minister, and Deputy Finance Minister. Beilin initiated the Oslo process in 1992, and in 1995 reached historic understandings with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas on a final status agreement, which served as a basis for the Clinton parameters. He was also a negotiator at the Taba talks with the Palestinians in January 2001. In December 2003, Beilin co-launched the Geneva Initiative with Yasser Abed Rabbo, presenting a full model agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.
